October 19, 2026 – Selena Gomez says heavy nicotine vaping changed her voice, and she’s urging fans not to start.
In a video posted to her Instagram Stories on Sunday, the 34-year-old singer and Only Murders in the Building star addressed long-running fan speculation about her vocal tone.
“I’m not gonna be able to change my voice,” Gomez said. “I vaped nicotine a lot.”
She called quitting difficult and said she hopes others won’t follow her path. “Nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it,” she said. “It’s so stupid, and it changed my voice.”
She added that she understands if some fans dislike how she sounds now. “That’s totally understandable. I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it.”
Gomez said she has stopped vaping. “I’m really excited because I stopped, and I just hope I can keep it up,” she said.
Earlier explanation
When fans asked about her voice during an Instagram Live last December, Gomez said her throat sometimes swells and did not mention vaping.
What the research says
Scientific research hasn’t conclusively shown how vaping affects the voice, according to ABC News, though users report dryness, irritation and worse vocal quality. The CDC says vaping is not safe.
