October 10, 2026 – With diesel at record highs and the midterms less than a month away, President Trump has announced an agreement that critics say puts politics ahead of Ukraine.
According to the president, Russia will immediately send more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the United States, with millions more barrels to follow over the coming months. The announcement comes after the Treasury Department issued a temporary license easing sanctions on Russian fuel shipments.
The backlash
Democrats responded quickly. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the arrangement a “deal with the devil,” arguing it’s meant to mask the economic pain of high fuel prices heading into November.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal went further, arguing the deal conflicts with recent bipartisan sanctions legislation designed to cut into Russia’s energy revenue. In his view, buying Russian fuel helps pay for Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
The criticism wasn’t limited to one side of the aisle. [Name any Republican critics and quote them here.] Their concern, as described by [source], is that reversing course on Russian energy undermines U.S. foreign policy goals and the Ukrainians fighting to defend themselves.
Why diesel, and why now
The politics are hard to ignore. Diesel has passed $6 a gallon nationally this fall, a record, and it matters well beyond the pump because trucking, farming and shipping all run on it. The squeeze comes from several directions at once: disrupted shipments through the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran conflict, and Russia’s own export ban on diesel, in place since July after Ukrainian strikes damaged its refineries.
This isn’t the first time the administration has eased pressure on Russian oil. Treasury has issued and extended temporary sanctions waivers several times this year, each time drawing objections from Democrats who say the relief mostly benefits Moscow.
What to watch
The key questions are practical. How long will the Treasury license last? Will Congress try to block or limit it? And does the deal actually bring pump prices down, or does it only add to Russia’s revenue?
