Can someone be located using commercial trucking or flight registry data?

Individuals can often be tracked using flight registry data, but commercial trucking data is significantly more restricted. Commercial aircraft continuously broadcast real-time location metrics—such as GPS position, speed, and tail numbers—via open ADS-B signals, allowing public tracking platforms like FlightAware or ADS-B Exchange to monitor specific flights globally. Conversely, while commercial trucks generate detailed location records through Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and fleet telematics, this data is private. ELD records are generally accessible only to the motor carrier, dispatchers, and law enforcement during safety audits or via court order, preventing general public tracking. Therefore, real-time location tracking is publicly accessible for aviation, but strictly gated behind legal and corporate privacy controls for trucking.
